You did get advice. You need to have it repaired, it's broken.

I suspect the problem is the ribbon cable going to the backlight. Mine has
also this problem (among others) & has broken just where the cable emerges
from the screen assembly.

If you feel up to doing the repair yourself try looking at:

FWIW, it could be the beginning of the end (of the motherboard-to-screen
ribbons that control keyboard input and touch screen). Happened to a
Series 5 of mine. First backlight, then touch screen, then keyboard,
finally darkness. So start to save everything to CF card, while you can.

That is probably just the start of bad things happening to your 5. Your
screen cable goes next. The auto switch on fails. Your case has peeled
already. Expensive repairs are the only way to keep your 5 going. CHOICES:

1. Have it repaired. Repetitive $$
2. Buy a new 5mx while they are still available - at least at PsionUSA.com.
Expensive $$$$
3. Switch to Revo/Mako. Somewhat less expensive $$$
Again at PsionUSA or Ebay.

I choose BOX #3. Many reasons. Mostly my experience with lousy reliability
of Series 5 & mx harware design and build. Revo Plus/Mako seem much more
reliable than my previous 5s and 5mxs. I bought three new Mako's over two
years ago when they were closed out at $70. One is in constant daily use.
Second is just on standby, charged monthly. Third is still shrinkwrapped.
These aren't PERFECT. But if you maintain good battery recharge discipline,
you should have a good reliable keyboarded PDA for years to come. I have not
experienced cable problems like the 5s. Or the autoswitch fault. It's not
likely we will ever see Psions or anything with a decent keyboard ever
again.

HTH
